The town of Brownsville was platted and laid out in 200 lots on October 27, 1815 by James Leviston.

As early as 1813 businesses in Brownsville included Baird's Trading, Asa Rollf's Inn, Yanders and Youse Mechantile House and Elijah Holland's Hattery.

Brownsville was made the County Seat of Union County in 1821. The first jail in Union County was built there at a cost of $438.00.

The County Seat was moved to Liberty, but Brownsville remained a thriving business community into the early 1900's.

In the fall of 1996 water lines were constructed to Brownsville, ending a water source problem of decades.

Brownsville enjoys a quiet atmosphere nestled between two hills along the East Fork of the Whitewater River, which is the headwaters of the Brookville Lake.

Liberty

Liberty is sweet, Liberty is cool. Liberty does not have a cool blurb about itself like Brownsville and West College Corner, even though it's the county seat and most populous community is Union County, IN. In fact, there are about 2500 people who live in Liberty proper, compared with the roughly 370 people who lived here when the town was incorporated in 1836.

College Corner was built straddling the state line between Indiana and Ohio, it is called West College Corner in Indiana and College Corner in Ohio. The Post Office is in Indiana but has an Ohio Zip Code of 45003 and an Indiana Zip Code of 47003.

College Corner is so named because it is situated on the corner of the land tract of Miami University which was founded in 1811.

The town was platted by tavern keeper Gideon T. Howe in 1837.

The present school building is built exactly on the state line with each half of the gymnasium being in each state. Teachers in the College Corner portion of the Union County School System must be certified by both states.

The approximate population of College Corner is about 1200 with over half of them in Indiana and the rest in Ohio. The College Corner Volunteer Fire Department has 20 members from both sides of town.

There are two city governments in slightly different form with the water service coming from Ohio and the sewage service operated in Indiana.
